We created Hilo because we know that although ripping denim is easy, mending it is hard. Current methods of denim repair like darning are only available to skilled sewers, and more accessible solutions like patches only superficially repair the hole, leaving it prone to ripping yet again.

This leaves most people with no choice but to purchase new denim. In addition to being expensive and not rescuing our favorite denim items, buying new denim is environmentally unsustainable. This practice contributes to the waste in the fashion industry which is responsible for 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Hilo seeks to put an end to this.

Hilo was created to combat the constant cycle of buying and  throwing  away  clothing.  With  Hilo,  consumers  will  be empowered to mend their own clothing with no skills or time required.

How does it work?

Using Hilo is easy: you simply place your ripped denim in the working area with a layer of traditional sewing machine interfacing on the inside and place an elastic ring to hold the denim taut. Interfacing is used with sewing machines to provide additional strength to weakened fabric which is why we find it important for this process. You can then shut the box, press the start button, and wait!  You’ll be able to watch as Hilo repairs your denim.

The following video outlines this process.
